Who Must Report?
Maryland Code Ann. Fam. Law §14‐302
requires each health practitioner, police officer, or human service worker who contacts, examines, attends, or treats an alleged vulnerable adult, and who has reason to believe that the alleged vulnerable adult has been subjected to abuse, neglect, self‐neglect, or exploitation, to report to the local Adult Protective Services department.

Warning signs include...

Financial Abuse/Exploitation ‐ Sudden change in finances and accounts, altered wills and trusts, unusual bank withdrawals, checks written as “loans” or “gifts,” and loss of property .

Somehow, my father trying over and over again to press charges for theft, all the calls to his house including the very day he ended up in the hospital, didn't result in any calls for investigations for elder abuse. None of the multiple things in the list rang any bells for a single officer!!

Now my dad is gone. The known drug users/felons my Dad tried to report repeatedly are being taken at their word that they had nothing to do with his death. One of them has broken his parole with his list of pending violations, but apparently he gets more rights and protection than my father did.

Let this be a warning to others. I talked to dad all the time. He was either too embarrassed, or too afraid, to tell me. Push authorities to do the right thing before your loved one is gone <3
