Black Saga and Black History Month Writing Contest winners announced

TOWSON, MD – Teams from Chapel Hill Elementary School and Catonsville Middle School emerged as winners at the Baltimore County Public Schools Black Saga Championship Competition.

Students prepare for the competition by using their out-of-school hours to study African-American history and culture. This year’s championship was held on March 10 at George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology. The winning teams are:

Elementary School Championship

  • 1st: Place (with a perfect score!)

Chapel Hill Elementary School Blue Team: Ryan Shay, Derick Su, and Gavin Weinhold
Padonia International School Blue Team: Madeline Knights, Rishit Mohla, and Saranya Prathipati
Chapel Hill Elementary School Gold Team – Noah Burch, Nathan Chien, and Brandon Moore

Middle School Championship

Catonsville Middle School Gold Team: Allison Kitchel, Matthew Perry, and Isabelle Wilson

  • 2nd: Place

Sudbrook Magnet Middle School Gold Team: Ameerah Austin, Jayvyn Fletcher-Strong, and Erin Tolentino
Catonsville Middle School Blue Team: Anajae James and Atoria James

The event opened with a keynote address by Dr. Penelope Martin-Knox, BCPS community superintendent, Zone 4. In between the middle and elementary school competitions, the winners of the BCPS Black History Month Writing Contest were announced, and three of the four winners shared their winning entries. The writing contest winners are:

Grades K-2:
Isabella Navari, Prettyboy Elementary School
for Rosa Parks
Teacher: Sherilyn Hale

Grades 3-5:
Kaia Gross, Westowne Elementary School
for Finish Line in Sight
Teacher: Elinor Coe

Grades 6-8:
Allison Glaser, Pine Grove Middle School
for A Raisin in the Sun
Teacher: Peggy Zink

Grades 9-12:
Anaiyah Conley, George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology
for Super Model
Teacher: Rebecca Mlinek
