The jury trial for a man who allegedly murdered a transgender woman in Harford County has been scheduled for May 21.

Brian Delen, 48, allegedly shot and killed Meghan Riley Lewis at an apartment complex in the 600 block of Churchill Road in Bel Air on Dec. 28, according to charging documents. He pulled out a handgun and shot Lewis while delivering food, according to charging documents.

Delen is charged with three felonies — – first- and second-degree murder and first-degree assault — as well as a misdemeanor, using a firearm in a violent crime, according to court documents.

Delen told police he asked Lewis something to the effect of “Are you waiting for a food delivery, sir” and that Lewis took offense to Delen misgendering her. Delen drove away, but Lewis followed on foot, according to charging documents. Then Delen stopped the car and reengaged with Lewis. Shortly after, Delen brought out a gun and fired a round, hitting Lewis in the left abdomen, according to charging documents. Medics transported Lewis to the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead that night, police said.

At a vigil outside the courthouse in Bel Air in early January, friends remembered Lewis as a welcoming leader in the Maryland transgender community who signed her emails “Stay sparkly” and was happiest when hiking mountains or dancing at music festivals.

“In a world where often existing as a trans person is seen as threatening, she made many trans people feel like there was a place they could belong,” Ruby Miller, a college sophomore said at the vigil. “I think that humanity that Meghan saw in all of us is what she would really want us to hold on to.”

Delen was initially held at the Harford County Detention Center without bond but was released on his own recognizance the day after the shooting; however, according to jail records, he was rebooked into the detention center Jan. 31. and according to court records, was denied home detention Feb. 2.

Circuit Court Judge Yolanda Curtin is scheduled to hear the caseMay 21″].
