[Baltimore Sun] Chris Roemer: The consequences of giving Biden a second term could be disastrous for the country | COMMENTARY

Read Time:4 Minute, 25 Second

“As you get older three things happen. The first is your memory goes, and I can’t remember the other two.” — Norman Wisdom

If President Joe Biden’s decline in mental acuity was not obvious before, Special Prosecutor Robert Hur seems to have put any doubt to rest.

Hur determined Biden “willfully retained and disclosed classified materials after his vice presidency when he was a private citizen.”

He then went on to say, “Based on our direct interactions with and observations of him, [Biden] is someone for whom many jurors will want to identify reasonable doubt. It would be difficult to convince a jury that they should convict him — by then a former president well into his 80s — of a serious felony that requires a mental state of willfulness.”

In other words, a jury would most likely conclude Biden was just an old man who really didn’t know what he was doing.

Some have suggested Hur should not have mentioned Biden’s failing memory in his report, But if the president’s worsening mental faculties were a factor in his decision not to prosecute, isn’t that something the American people have a right to know, especially considering Biden is asking us to give him another four years in the White House?

Democrats are incredulous that there are still Republicans who support Donald Trump, but isn’t lying about a sitting president’s sagacity worse?

Notwithstanding, partisan Democrats were all over the place in the days following the release of Hur’s report, defending Biden.

Some, like progressive commentator Richard Fowler, who refers to himself as a “millennial messaging expert,”  said it was to be expected Biden’s memory would be diminished during his interview with the special counsel because that interview occurred on the heels of Hamas’ attack on Israel.

I guess there’s only so much Biden can handle at one time? That’s reassuring. I hope the world cooperates with that limitation.

Maryland Congressman Jamie Raskin told reporters Hur’s report completely exonerated Biden. It did? Maybe he was referencing another report.

While it’s hard sometimes to tell exactly what Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman means, he seems to think age-related mental decline shouldn’t even be an issue.

“Trump is going on 78.” he said. “And the president is 81 years old. Is that meaningful? Of course not, it’s the same. They are older folks, and they’re our choices.”

As for Biden himself, he expressed indignation that Hur had the temerity to bring up the death of his son, Beau, during the interview. “How in the hell dare he raise that,” Biden told reporters at a rare White House press conference. “Frankly,” he said, “when I was asked the question, I thought to myself, it wasn’t any of their damn business.”

Come to find out, it was Biden himself who brought up the death of his son, not the special counsel.

He must have forgotten.

According to NBC News, “Biden raised his son’s death after being asked about his workflow at a Virginia rental home from 2016 to 2018” when he was working with a ghostwriter on a memoir concerning the death of his son. This was the same ghostwriter with whom Biden shared classified materials.

Finally, there were Democrats like Vice President Kamala Harris, who chose to focus not on whether Biden is competent to serve, but rather on why they think it was “inappropriate” for Hur to mention Biden’s failing memory in his report.

I guess they believe that’s the kind of thing that should be kept secret, hidden from the prying eyes of the American public.

Biden is past his prime and in decline. Everybody knows it, even those who won’t admit it. All you have to do is watch and listen to the man to know it’s true. Hur simply put it in writing.

Cognitive decline happens to a lot of people in their 80s, and I have to believe the pressures of being president makes it far more likely to happen to octogenarians occupying the Oval Office.

Biden is not going to get any better. In fact, he might very well get significantly worse.

Still, Democrats are asking us to give him a second term and are working hard to conceal his true condition from the American people.

I find that unbelievably irresponsible and an extreme example of a political party putting its own interests above those of the country.

I understand Democrats don’t want Trump anywhere near a second term, but is re-electing a president who is failing before the eyes of the nation — and the world — an acceptable alternative?

The world is on fire and America’s place in that world is being challenged as never before. Biden is simply not up to the job and he will only get worse as the next five years tick by.

The consequences of giving Biden a second term could very well be disastrous for this country. To pretend otherwise because he belongs to a particular political party is to be willfully blind to an extent that goes far beyond simple partisanship.
