Each week, the Howard County Times will pick a Team of the Week and hand out three game balls to the top performers through all sports across the county.

Team of the Week

River Hill girls indoor track and field: The Hawks placed third in Class 3A at Wednesday’s state championships. The 4×800 relay team of Marella Virmani, Lauren Virmani, Alyssa Mattes and Nikita Mohan highlighted the day, winning the race with a record-breaking performance, beating a 21-year 3A record.

Honorable mention

Oakland Mills wrestling: The Scorpions crowned five individual champions at Monday’s 54th Howard County Tournament and placed third overall as a team.

Game Ball No. 1

Joe Clark, Oakland Mills, senior, wrestling

Clark continued a dominant senior season, starting the week winning the Howard County title at 165 pounds. The senior continued his momentum into the postseason, winning the 4A/3A West Region title, entering states at 36-0.

Game Ball No. 2

Marlin Newsome, Centennial, senior, indoor track and field

Newsome put on a show in his final track and field state championships. He broke the 2A classification record in the 55-meter dash, finishing in 6.38 seconds, earning his first indoor gold medal. The veteran also was part of the Eagles’ 4×200 relay team that placed third.

Game Ball No. 3

Katherine Wood, Atholton, senior, indoor track and field

Wood set a personal record in the shot put, throwing 38 feet, 4 inches. That distance put her the fifth best in Maryland and she finished third place at the 3A state championships.
