[Baltimore Sun] Orioles’ Jackson Holliday playing second base, batting 9th in MLB debut vs. Red Sox
It’s the day Orioles fans have been waiting for.
Jackson Holliday, the consensus No. 1 prospect in baseball, is playing second base and batting ninth in his MLB debut Wednesday night against the Boston Red Sox in Fenway Park. First pitch is 7:10 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on MASN.
Holliday, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 MLB draft, joins shortstop Gunnar Henderson and catcher Adley Rutschman as current or former top prospects on the Orioles roster, continuing a historic run for the farm system. Since Baseball America began ranking prospects in 1990, Baltimore is the first organization to have three straight players at the top spot.

Orioles calling up Jackson Holliday, MLB’s top prospect, after torrid start in Triple-A
Holliday, 20, started the season in Triple-A Norfolk after being one of the Orioles’ final cuts at the end of spring training. The son of seven-time MLB All-Star outfielder Matt Holliday slashed .333/.482/.595 with two home runs, nine RBIs and 12 walks in 10 games for the Tides before getting the call to join the big league club for its ongoing road trip. In 155 games across the minor leagues, Holliday slashed .321/.451/.497, good for a .949 OPS, with 15 home runs, 93 RBIs and as many walks (138) as strikeouts (138).
To make room for Holliday on the 26-man active roster, the Orioles designated utility player Tony Kemp for assignment. Holliday will wear No. 7, formerly worn by Cal Ripken Sr. and Billy Ripken, after receiving the blessing of the Ripken family.
