[Baltimore Sun] Election 2024: What Marylanders need to know about how to vote, who the candidates are

Read Time:7 Minute, 8 Second

As Election Day is less than 100 days away and races for president and other officers are heating up, Marylanders are gearing up to make their ballot selections.

Election Day on Nov. 5 will feature not only candidates running for president of the United States, but also seats in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, local circuit courts, school boards and other offices.

Here’s what to know before casting a ballot:

Registering

Those new to Maryland can register to vote in the state during early voting or on Election Day by providing poll workers proof of residence. This can be an MVA-issued license, permit, ID card, change of address card, or a paycheck, bank statement, utility bill, or other government document with the name and new address, according to the Maryland Board of Elections.

This can be done at any early voting location in the voter’s county throughout the early voting period, which lasts every day from Oct. 24 through Oct. 31 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Those registering on Election Day can find their polling place using the Maryland Board of Elections’ search tool.

Casting the ballot

Those voting early can do so at any early voting site in their county during the early voting period. Residents voting on Election Day must do so at their assigned polling location between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. Voters may also vote by mail or via drop box.

Residents can request an absentee ballot on the board’s website and must return it by mail, leave it in a drop box, or take it to a polling place, early voting center or local elections board by 8 p.m. on Election Day.

Those planning to request a ballot via mail or fax must do so by Oct. 29. Residents intending to obtain their ballot virtually must request it by Nov. 1.
