A New Jersey man was charged with driving under the influence during the investigation of a crash into a state trooper’s memorial, authorities announced.

The New Jersey State Police wrote in a Facebook post that officers arrived at a stretch of Interstate 78, where authorities said they found David Neufield, a 38-year-old from Berkeley Heights, receiving first aid.

They also discovered a controlled dangerous substance inside a car at the scene, as well as damage to a roadside memorial for Thomas Hanratty, according to the agency. Hanratty was a state trooper who died in 1992 after being struck by a passing car.

“The crash caused significant damage to the Trooper Hanratty memorial, a solemn reminder of the daily dangers our troopers face while serving and protecting the public,” the New Jersey State Police said. “This incident underscores the importance of safe and sober driving on our roadways.”

Neufield was also charged at a nearby hospital with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and being criminally under the influence, the Facebook post reads.

The agency had a goal last year of limiting crashes involving drugs to a 9% increase from 2016-20, when there was an average of 1,555 accidents, according to a 2023 report from the state’s Division of Highway Traffic Safety. State police said they wanted to cap the increase at 1,694 from 2019-23.
