[Baltimore Sun] Orioles postseason opener: What you need to know

Read Time:1 Minute, 44 Second

The MLB playoffs are back in Baltimore, and fans will be allowed to enter Camden Yards several hours before Tuesday’s first pitch.

Gates to Camden Yards will open at 1:30 p.m. for the Orioles’ wild-card round opener against the Kansas City Royals, the team announced Monday. Tuesday’s first pitch is scheduled for 4:08 p.m., with Orioles ace Corbin Burnes expected to start at pitcher for Baltimore. Parking lots will open at 12:30 p.m., 3 1/2 hours before first pitch.

Gates open significantly earlier Tuesday than the regular season, when gates opened one hour before first pitch on weekdays and up to two hours before first pitch on weekends.

Adding to the fanfare of Tuesday’s postseason opener, ESPN personality and Orioles fan Scott Van Pelt will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Van Pelt, a Brookeville, Maryland, native and University of Maryland alumnus, has been with ESPN since 2001. He began his career covering the now-Washington Commanders for WTTG-TV, the city’s Fox affiliate.

Additional pregame festivities include a flyover by the Baltimore City Police Aviation Unit, and Salisbury native André Wilson singing the national anthem accompanied by a flag drop over the center field batter’s eye during the anthem.

This week will be the second consecutive season the Orioles host postseason baseball. They lost in three games to the Texas Rangers in last year’s American League Division Series after a 101-win regular season earned them the No. 1 seed. Baltimore won 10 fewer games this year and did not earn a wild-card round bye.

The second game of the series on Wednesday will start at 4:38 p.m. The third and final game of the series, if necessary, will begin at 4:08 p.m. but could be moved depending on other results. Game 1 will air on ESPN2, with the final games of the series scheduled for ESPN.
