[Baltimore Sun] Francis Scott Key football rallies past Century, 12-7, on late touchdown pass

Read Time:2 Minute, 35 Second

The Francis Scott Key Eagles continued their turnaround season Friday, defeating Century, 12-7, on homecoming night, to move to 4-1 on the season.

Both teams came into Friday’s game already improved from last season. Century and Francis Scott Key went a combined 1-19 last season with the only win being FSK’s over the Knights. One year later, both came into the matchup at .500 or better and carried plenty of optimism.

After an evening of the Eagles’ smothering defense keeping Century in check, things finally began to click for the Knights in the fourth quarter. Running back Jonathon Ferguson led them down the field and punctuated the drive with a touchdown. A successful extra point put Century up, 7-6, with less than five minutes left.

Needing a response but starting with the ball deep in its own territory, FSK came out firing. Sophomore quarterback Jacob Etzler found receiver Bryson Lookingbill on a crossing route, hitting him perfectly in stride. Lookingbill turned on the jets and took it to the house on a nearly 90-yard catch-and-run.

A failed two-point attempt left the Eagles up 12-7 with less than four minutes to go in the game.

Century attempted a winning scoring drive together, but had no success. Colton Feister and Austin Gross, broke up Century’s last-gasp deep pass to seal the game.

“I was so bummed last week losing to Liberty. Last week was supposed to be my game, but I made this week my game,” Gross said.  who had two game changing plays in the victory against Century.

Gross made a couple big plays, including intercepting a Jake Dexter pass at the end of the first quarter.

It gave the Eagles momentum and Etzler used it, connecting with Lookingbill for 40 yards to set FSK up in scoring range. Etzler put his team ahead for the first time with a quarterback sneak.

Century was persistent in its run game, having a good one-two punch with running backs Ferguson and Delon Barnes. Unfortunately for the Knights, a few bad plays and costly penalties hurt, not to mention the relentlessness of Eagles defensive lineman Jack Bowman, who was forcing pressure and making big tackles.

“Eleven hats to the ball, everyone. That’s what I do every single play,” Bowman said of his mindset.

Both defenses had their way in the second half. FSK shut Century down earlier and set the offense up in good field position, but Christian Gordon intercepted Etzler to give Century the ball back.

However, FSK’s defense prevented Century from doing anything with it until the fourth quarter.

Century falls to 2-3, but that doesn’t take away clear improvements they’ve made following a winless season last year.

“What we talked about was adversity and perseverance”, coach David Ferguson said. “We knew coming in from the seniors, all the way down, we had leadership. We had a good tight team. It was a great environment, and great practices. We knew that was going to transition on the field.”
