[Baltimore Sun] Capital Gazette high school Athletes of the Week (Oct. 7-12): Severn Run’s Chase Campbell and Severna Park’s Nicol Chovanec
The Capital Gazette is honoring one boy and one girl high school student-athlete each week as Athletes of the Week. To submit nominations, email kfominykh@baltsun.com or direct message @capgazsports on Instagram by Saturday evening.
Boys Athlete of the Week
Chase Campbell, Severn Run
Severn Run athletics was a blank canvas that Campbell, a junior, has now painted all over. The golfer, who competed at Meade the previoustwo years, guided the Wolves to claim their first five matches, go 7-1 and earn the C Division crown. On Oct. 7, he became the first in school history to advance to the District V Championships with a 97 score.
“Chase put the work in and it’s cool to see him win,” Severn Run coach Jeremy Caruso said. “I can’t say I’m too surprised. He was consistently there with the numbers all year and he was there on Monday.”
Girls Athlete of the Week
Nicol Chovanec, Severna Park
The top two individual girls found themselves experiencing deja vu at the Anne Arundel golf county championships. Just like last fall, Broadneck’s Summer Stroop and Chovanec were locked in a tie after the 18th hole. But unlike last time, Chovanec came out on top and earned her second title in three years.
And just as she did as a freshman, she scored an 84.
“I was way happier this year than last year. I remember being nervous then — I’d never played a playoff hole. This year I was excited,” Chovanec said. “My round wasn’t my best — I needed some extra holes to prove I can win against her. She’s a very competitive person. I feel like I am too, so we kinda match each other. We have that desire to win. I knew when I made the playoff holes I just thought, ‘I can win this.’”
