Over 7 million views and growing
The 7th District Civic Council of Baltimore County, Inc. announced in a press release that the two Baltimore County Executive candidates, Republican Al Redmer Jr. and Democrat John Olszewski Jr., will face-off in a debate to be held on Friday, October 5, 2018, from 7 PM to 9:30 PM at the North Point Government Center.
Mr. Redmer is the current Insurance Commissioner for the State of Maryland, while his opponent, Mr. Olszewski is the former Delegate from the 7th District.
This should be an interesting matchup between the two. Mr. Redmer is described as a conservative candidate based on his promise to stop the “sanctuary status” of Baltimore County. Mr. Oszewski, on the other hand, describes himself as a Progressive Democrat who is running on issues dealing with free education, higher minimum wages, and transparency in government.
What is interesting about the debate is the location, the North Point Government Center, which then Councilman John Olszewski, Sr. and former County Executive Kevin Kamenetz attempted to sell to a private developer in a highly controversial and hotly contested move.
The community rallied around saving the center, which also housed the police department’s 12th precinct, athletic fields, and other government facilities. Following the community outcry, the plans to sell the site were dealt a setback by the Maryland State Court, which ruled in 2016 to stop the sale of the center until state officials gave their approval.
As a result of the court’s decision, the county was forced to relocate the police precinct to the Eastwood Magnet Elementary School on Eastern Boulevard at a cost to taxpayers of $18 million for the renovation of the school building.
Despite the renovation and relocation of what is now called Precinct 12 – Dundalk, there are still police units occupying parts of the NP Government Center.
The 7th District Civic Council of Baltimore County, Inc. is encouraging residents of Baltimore County to submit questions for the candidates to answer at the debate.
