Ignoring the fact that he leads the 7th highest taxed state in the nation, Governor Larry Hogan is promising free community college tuition.
Does anyone find it strange that Gov. Hogan is behind a program that certainly will increase the tax burden on the middle class?
Before we get into the numbers, let’s look at some cold hard facts regarding the middle class. Middle-class wages have been stagnant since 1975, and almost 50% of the remaining population pays no federal taxes at all.
How does the fact that Maryland is quickly becoming a sanctuary state fit into this equation? In addition to that issue, does this free tuition apply to out-of-state residents such as the case with the Dreamers? Governor Hogan failed to mention some of the tremendous burdens placed upon middle-class taxpayers in dealing with immigration issues that impact Blue states such as Maryland when it comes to the cost factor.
- As of 2016, 48 percent of DACA-eligible immigrants in Maryland, or 11,513 people, had applied for DACA.
Could it be that our Republican governor is, in fact, a RINO, (Republican in name only) and is trying to moderate towards the left?
What are the implications to this to the middle class? Here is a video to provide some insight:
Just to be fair, let’s look at the flip side of this situation and hear what former President Obama said regarding the caravan of immigrants headed toward our border:
Let’s take a look at what the people on the actual “other side of the fence” have to say about what Obama is calling a “non-issue.” Here is some information from Tijuana Mayor Juan Manuel Gastelum:
Gastelum described the caravan of Central American migrants as a “horde” that has been infiltrated by criminals who now threaten the community, in an interview with Milenio Television.
There is no mention of whether Gov. Hogan’s free college education plan covers out-of-state tuition, or if this type of taxpayer-funded program actually works. Here is a quote from the Baltimore Sun on the latter point:
The programs are viewed as politically popular, but experts say it’s still unclear if they are effective at increasing levels of education or stimulating the economy.
So it seems that everyone is getting in the Thanksgiving spirit. Baltimore County Council is cooking up the turkey in the TPA tax boondoggle, and now Gov. Hogan is providing dessert in the form of a cream pie that is being shoved in the face of the struggling middle class taxpayers.
Stay tuned, because we believe there will be many more meals like this served up by our politicians in the coming months.
