Obituary: Tom Toporovich, known as a beloved community leader and the Mayor of Dundalk dies at 89

Mr. Tom Torporovich, passed away today, April 22, 2019, at the Riverview Care Center after battling long-term health issues. At the time of his passing, Mr. Torporovich was 89 years old. Toporovich was born in New York and often spoke of his childhood memories.

Affectionately known as the “Mayor of Dundalk,” Torporovich was a strong supporter of the Baltimore County Police Department and a beloved community leader.

During those many years, Tom was very active in the Dundalk Optimist Club and used his own money to fund the Police Officer of the Year Award. He was instrumental in running the PAR Fund (Police Assistance and Relief) for the Baltimore County Police Department for many years.

A Korean War veteran, Tom started his generosity five years ago to honor his deceased brother Edward Toporovich, who was killed in action as a tail gunner in a Middle River-built Martin B-26 Bomber during WWII. Edward was awarded three Military Air Awards posthumously.

Tom also served as the longtime master of ceremonies for the Heritage Fair, as well as secretary to the county council from 1970 to 1991.

Mr. Toporovich while serving as the Baltimore County council secretary, played a crucial role in the hiring of former New York Deputy Police Commissioner Neil Behan who became the longest-serving police chief in Baltimore County’s history.
