[Baltimore Sun] Capital Gazette boys and girls high school Athlete of the Week (Oct. 21-26): Broadneck’s Ian Mauldin, Severn’s Madison Watson
The Capital Gazette is honoring one boy and one girl high school student-athlete each week as Athletes of the Week. To submit nominations, email kfominykh@baltsun.com or direct message @capgazsports on Instagram by Saturday evening.
Boys athlete of the week
Ian Mauldin, Broadneck
On a Friday in which several players put up big numbers, the Bruins’ senior running back stood a cut above the rest by setting a program record for touchdowns in a game (5) against North County on Friday. Mauldin tied the school career rushing touchdown record (47) and is two touchdowns away from surpassing 2018 Capital Gazette Player of the Year Ethon Williams’ total career touchdowns mark (53).
“Watching Ian break the game TD record with five in the first half was so exciting,” Broadneck coach Rob Harris said. “His hard work is paying off and is a testament to the entire team — and this will not be his last.”
Girls athlete of the week
Madison Watson, Severn
The Admirals’ season stayed alive thanks to the Severn senior scoring the go-ahead goal in overtime against Bryn Mawr on Oct. 25 in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference quarterfinals.
