[Baltimore Sun] Trans-rights debate front and center on Capitol Hill

The bathrooms on Capitol Hill are currently at the center of the transgender rights debate. Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., is on a crusade to implement a rule banning transgender women from using the women’s bathrooms at the Capitol.

On Thursday, a transgender rights activist interrupted Mace during a conference at Georgetown, yelling, “This is ridiculous. This is the day after trans day of visibility. We have had dozens of trans people die this year because of the hate and lies that you are spreading.”

Mace’s push was prompted by the election of the first trans woman to Congress, Delaware’s Rep.-elect Sarah McBride.

“I have already said that I will not use multi-stall women’s restrooms in the Capitol,” McBride told CBS on Thursday. “I would like my approach of respecting everyone to contrast with the disrespect that we are seeing.”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., slammed Mace’s effort, telling reporters, “They’re not doing this to protect people. They’re endangering women. They’re endangering girls of all kinds and everyone should reject it.”

The bathroom debate comes on the heels of far-left critic and Democratic Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., who says he’s opposed to, quote, “male or formerly male athletes” playing women’s and girls’ sports.

“We need to be able to debate contentious issues without just being shut down,” said Moulton.

Highlighting the transgender rights debate was part of the GOP’s winning formula in November. One of Donald Trump’s most potent ads attacked Harris on the issue. After voters viewed the ad where Harris talks about supporting using taxpayer money to pay for transgender care of inmates, support for Trump jumped 2.7%, according to data from a Harris super PAC.
