Send in the clowns. Oh, wait … they’re already here. The Baltimore County Council has shown a continued disdain for constituents and directives while making poor attempts to draw a redistricting map. (Photo Credit: Baltimore County Flickr)

Abraham Lincoln supposedly said, “You can fool all of the people some of time; you can fool some of the people all of the time, but you can’t fool all the people all the time.”

Sounds like he was talking about the Baltimore County Council.

Earlier this week, the council needed to submit a new redistricting map to comply with a February court order. According to Maryland Matters, U.S. District Court Judge Lydia Kay Griggsby ordered the new map because the council’s plan needed to include either “two reasonably compact majority-Black Districts” or another council district in which Black voters “otherwise have an opportunity to elect a representative of their choice.”

The deadline was Tuesday before midnight, and the council just squeaked in before the deadline. They took as much time as they possibly could to try and get it right this time.

But, as Maxwell Smart famously said, “Missed it by that much.

The new attempt included a smaller Black majority, 61.12%, in District 4 and included a white plurality, at 45.80%, rather than a white majority, in District 2. The new District 2 also would have higher percentage of Black residents, moving from 29.58% in the council’s December map to 41.22% in the new map.

That new map was the equivalent of the council members thumbing their noses at Judge Griggsby and the citizens of color in Baltimore County.

Thankfully, this pitiful attempt did not fool all of the people.

Maryland Matters on Twitter: “Plaintiffs in a federal lawsuit against the Baltimore County Council’s redistricting plan argued in a Thursday court filing that a new map for county council districts, submitted by the council, still fails to comply with the Voting Rights Act. https://t.co/cw3aknhjkh / Twitter”

Even the lame Baltimore Sun had no choice but to run an opinion piece that called it like it is regarding the council:

Folks, we have been saying over and over that the council only cares about what benefits the council.

Now they have to waste even more time and effort, not to mention our tax dollars, fighting this latest lawsuit.

Will the council members actually do what they should … and what they’ve been ordered to do by the court?

Time will tell, but don’t hold your breath.
