The American Civil Liberties Union is working to change Baltimore County schools’ policy on patriotic exercises including the Pledge of Allegiance.

The organization says all students should have the right to peacefully and silently refuse to participate in these exercises.

ACLU officials said that in February, 11-year-old, Mariana Taylor was reprimanded for kneeling during the pledge.

She was a student at Catonsville Middle School when it happened.

The school system’s policy requires that everyone stand and salute for the pledge.

But the policy also says that any student or staff who wants to be excused from the flag salute can be.

Th ACLU says the policy is ambiguous and wants a clear policy that ensures first amendment rights.

Taylor said she did nothing wrong.

“Students are allowed to take stands as long as it’s not disruptive to the classroom and I feel that my confrontation was more disruptive than the kneeling itself,” Taylor said.

The school system told WMAR 2 News that because of privacy concerns it could not comment on Taylor’s statement.
