Letter to the Editor: Delegate Bob Long speaks out on tax bills and ransomware

Dear Editor,

Happy summer to everyone! This is the time of the year to enjoy the outdoors and to spend time with family. Summer is a great time, but there is one part of summer that I dread and that is the release of our property tax bill.

My office has been contacted numerous times regarding Baltimore City’s Water Meter readings and my office has worked diligently to resolve these matters.

We have been successfully working through the process with Baltimore City. Unfortunately, Baltimore County policy is not to adjust or credit sewer service charges. I will be writing a letter to the Baltimore County Executive Office and our Councilman’s Office addressing this issue.

The past few years, some property owners have seen a higher sewage service charge on their bills. I am very concerned that Baltimore City’s ransomware will impact sewer service charges.

As Baltimore County pointed out last week, Baltimore City ransomware issues hurt Baltimore County. It was reported that Baltimore County government was in the process of sending out their annual tax bills and they were not able to verify over 14,000 sewer charges.

To Baltimore County and Baltimore City’s credit, they are contacting the 14,000 residents through a letter, but this is very concerning. Our tax bills are high enough with the mandate fees.

I am going to continue to monitor these tax bills to make sure my constituents are not paying more than their fair share.
