We are able to accomplish some amazing feats of medicine today, folks.

Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez at NYU Langone Health in Manhattan, along with the team of 100 additional medical personnel, performed a face transplant on a California man who attempted suicide by shooting himself in the face.

The recipient of this medical miracle is Cameron Underwood, 26, of New York City. The face donor was William Fisher of Manhattan, who was a student at Johns Hopkins University but died after a long battle with mental illness in 2017.

Due to the extent of Underwood’s injuries, Rodriguez and his team had to graft the entire mid and lower components of the donor skull and face.

The New York Post goes into great detail in describing this miracle surgery.

According to this article, suicide among millennials is the third leading cause of death. Let’s hope that our mental health care is able to make just as many advances as our surgical health care.
