Following up on our exclusive article about the violent assault that occurred at the Holabird Middle School (HMS), the Post attempted to determine the status of the juvenile accused of assaulting the school resource officer (SRO). We wonder if parents with children in the BCPS system would want a student with such violent capabilities as to attack a police officer sitting among their children.
With that question in mind, we called the principal’s office at HMS and immediately were told that there would be no comment about the student’s status. We asked to speak to the principal and were told that she was not available and would not comment. We made it quite clear that we were not seeking personal information regarding the juvenile, but the only response we received was that our message would be delivered to the principal.
Due to the serious nature of this assault and the continuing violence at HMS, we find it necessary to hold the principal of the school accountable. To that end, straight from the HMS website, here is the principal’s contact information.
Attempting to gain further information, the Post contacted BCPS Media Relations to learn more information about the safety of students at HMS and other county schools.
We called every number listed on the webpage, and every call was transferred to voicemail. There was one contact who provided a cell phone number, however, why waste another dime.
While disappointed that we could not get the information we were seeking, the Post is not surprised. In the past, we have encountered a serious lack of transparency within the BCPS system, especially when it comes to seeking information from BCPS attorney Margaret Howie and chief of staff Mychael Dickerson.
Hopefully, after the departure of Interim Superintendent Verletta White, a new era of transparency will begin.
The Baltimore Post strongly believes that transparency is paramount to developing a system where our children can be educated in a safe environment that protects them, the teachers, and the staff.
Maybe if Verletta White had given this concept more credence, she might be in a different position today. Instead, she is a lame duck who was recently turned down for the superintendent job by the BCPS School Board.
Sadly, Councilman Todd Crandell also refused to comment on the SRO assault, as well as the overall conditions at HMS.
We’re just reporting the facts, folks. As always, our motto is, “You read; you decide.”
