Folks, the theme of this column is: “Capitalism vs Socialism.”

Under capitalism, individuals own and control the land, capital, and production of industry. If you have an idea for a new business or invention, you are free to pursue this without government interference. Those who fund their own enterprise benefit from the fruits of that enterprise, and they do not have to share those fruits with the general public.

Meanwhile, socialism is a concept that individuals should not have ownership of land, capital (money), or industry, but rather the whole community collectively owns and controls property, goods, and production.  Ideally, in this system, all share equally in work and the fruits of their labor, and everyone pays to get a venture off the ground.

So what does this have to do with the citizens of Baltimore County? Let us explain.

Tradepoint Atlantic is bidding to become the largest logistical operation on the East Coast, but it will do so at the expense of the taxpayers. The most profound impact will be on the middle-class.

You see, Tradepoint Atlantic is attempting to subvert the “free market” concept of risk vs reward. We refer to this as Corporate Welfare.

How dangerous is Corporate Welfare, you ask? Here is one prime example that broke the taxpayers’ backs:

Solar-power company Solyndra received $535 million in a federal loan through the Obama administration. After the company went bankrupt, it wasn’t able to pay that loan back.

Yet, here we are, attempting to give your tax dollars to billionaires.

How many times do we have to go through this same experience? Have we forgotten the attempt to revive a contaminated wasteland in the RG Steel boondoggle, which left thousands of workers without pensions and healthcare benefits?

We know the main players behind this potential invasion–one that will alter both the Chesapeake Bay and the coastline of one of the premier vacation sites in the state of Maryland. The latter deals with Ocean City, which is attempting to fight off the construction of windmills by a company doing business with Tradepoint Atlantic.

The ruling class of politicians behind this travesty of deception is simply looking to further political ambitions and maintain a hold on its power base. Take a close look at the photo below.

This entire matter can be summed up with this very important quote:

We may think that corruption is a problem of poor nations, but there is a great deal of crony capitalism in the United States. Affirmative action is one form of wholesale corruption that is prominent in the United States. By definition, affirmative action involves tipping the scales in hiring or admissions decisions in favor of particular favored groups at the expense of others.

Please take the time to view the photographs below, which will show the huge impact this corporate welfare project will have on this nation’s economic engine.

One final thought before closing. Think about 30,000 tractor-trailers coming through the 7th District on a regular basis, increased rail traffic, increased pollution, increased traffic congestion, and a multitude of other issues impacting our quality of life.

And while we, the taxpayers, will pay for it, any potential rewards will go back to the billionaires. It is simply the handouts of socialism coupled with the “owners take all” philosophy of capitalism.

We’ll pause while we wait for someone to explain how that is fair to the hard working middle class residents of Baltimore County.
