[Fox Business] GM pauses sales new line of trucks over software issue

General Motors said Tuesday it has temporarily paused sales of 2024 model year Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon mid-size trucks to fix intermittent software quality issues.

GM said that a fix has been identified and that its voluntary and temporary pause aims to fix the software issues before they’re delivered to customers. The company added that trucks that have received the software fix are being shipped out to dealers and that it plans to lift this hold shortly to speed up deliveries.

“We are disappointed when we choose to pause sales, but we are committed to quality and the customer experience, therefore software updates will continue to be part of the process as our vehicles become more and more technologically advanced,” GM said in a statement provided to FOX Business.

“We’ve put in place a world-class software leadership team that is urgently working to overcome any issues in the short term, while building for the long term, including revamping the software development process and more importantly the validation process. We’re confident that our vehicles will have software that exceeds expectations,” GM added.

The software issue doesn’t impact the 2023 Colorado and Canyon trucks on dealer lots or those that have been sold to customers, and GM isn’t planning a recall to address the issue.

GM PAUSES SALES OF NEW CHEVY BLAZER EV DUE TO SOFTWARE ISSUE

The sales pause comes after GM in late December paused sales of the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV to address a software issue involving warnings that were sent to users while the company worked on a fix.

The company said Tuesday that it’s “working around the clock to alleviate the software quality issues a portion of our customer base experienced in Blazer EV. We are making progress.”

GM CEO Mary Barra said at a conference last week that the Detroit automaker has “already revamped the software development process and more importantly the validation process. Right now, we’re going through a little bit of learning pains, as we make this transition.”

[Fox Business] Delta flight to view total solar eclipse sells out

People rushed to scoop up tickets for a Delta Air Lines flight designed for watching the upcoming total solar eclipse.

Hopeful solar eclipse viewers have already bought up all the seats on the Delta Flight 1228 slated to run April 8, a spokesperson for Delta confirmed to FOX Business on Tuesday, the day after it officially unveiled the special flight.

The flight, which will travel from Austin to Detroit, has been “timed to give those on board the best chance of safely viewing the solar eclipse at its peak” and to “spend as much time as possible directly within the path of totality,” according to a Delta press release.

NASA said the April 8 total solar eclipse will start becoming visible in North America in Mexico at approximately 11 a.m. local time, with the path of the eclipse subsequently expected to move through certain American states in the afternoon.

It will be the “last total eclipse we’ll see over North America until 2044,” according to Delta Air Lines Lead Meteorologist Warren Weston.

DELTA WILL LAUNCH A PREMIUM TIER OF LOUNGES THIS YEAR

Delta will use an A220-300 plane. That aircraft will “offer especially premium viewing due to the aircraft’s extra large windows,” according to the carrier.

The company noted that while its flight plans for DL 1228 on April 8 “have been designed to maximize time within the path of totality, this is subject to change due to factors outside of Delta’s control such as weather and air traffic control that could impact timing and aircraft.”

It also has five other flights running the same day that it said will feature “prime eclipse-viewing opportunities.”

NASA said people who want to watch the solar eclipse must do so using specialized eclipse glasses or they could suffer eye injuries. It is “only safe to remove your eclipse glasses during what’s known as totality,” which may only span a minute or two, according to the agency.

TOP AIRLINES FOR ON-TIME ARRIVALS IN 2023

The most recent total solar eclipse took place in December 2021. However, only people in Antarctica fell within its path of totality, NASA said.

Parts of the U.S. were last able to see a total solar eclipse in 2017. April’s is expected to “last more than twice as long as the one that occurred in 2017, and the path is nearly twice as wide,” Weston said.

[Fox Business] Ford cuts prices of electric Mustang Mach-E by up to $8,100

Ford Motor Co. on Tuesday said it had cut prices on its Mustang Mach-E electric SUV by up to $8,100 after sales fell sharply in January.

The No. 2 U.S. automaker’s lowest-price 2023 model year Mach E version now has a suggested retail price of $39,895, down from $42,995. The higher-end Mach-E GT spec will cost about $7,600 less, at $52,395. Other versions including the extended-range premium version will drop in price by $8,100 to $48,895.

Ford said the price cuts come as the automaker continues “to adapt to the market to achieve the optimal mix of sales growth and customer value.”

CALIFORNIA EV SALES SEE FIRST DECLINE IN A DECADE: REPORT

The Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker said U.S. sales of the Mach-E fell by 51% in January to 1,295.

The Mach-E lost eligibility for a $3,750 tax credit on Jan. 1 after new U.S. Treasury Department battery sourcing requirements aimed at weaning the electric vehicle supply chain away from China took effect. Numerous other models also lost tax credits.

BIDEN ADMINISTRATION CONSIDERING EV SWITCH DELAY DUE TO WEAK DEMAND

Last week, Treasury told Reuters it has reimbursed auto dealers for about $135 million in advance point-of-sale consumer EV tax credit payments since the start of the year through Feb. 6. The Internal Revenue Service has received more than 25,000 time of sale reports, including more than 19,500 with advance payment requests.

Tesla’s Model Y crossover, which competes with the Mach-E, starts at $42,990 before federal tax credits of $7,500.

The Elon Musk-led EV maker sparked a price war early last year in a bid to spur demand and grab more market share.

Ford and other legacy automakers have slowed their EV push to instead focus on higher-margin hybrid and gas-powered models.

Ford said in January it would reduce production of its F-150 Lightning pickup truck, cutting production at its Michigan Rouge Electric Vehicle Center to one shift starting April 1.
