[Baltimore Sun] Maryland women’s basketball guards Shyanne Sellers, Jakia Brown-Turner named All-Big Ten

Maryland junior point guard Shyanne Sellers was named Tuesday to the All-Big Ten first team by the coaches and media.

Sellers leads the Terps in scoring (15.3 points per game) and assists (5.3) and ranks second in rebounds (5.0) and steals (1.4). The preseason All-Big Ten honoree scored in double figures in 22 of 28 games this season and compiled four double-doubles.

Graduate student shooting guard Jakia Brown-Turner was selected by the coaches to the All-Big Ten second team after leading Maryland in points against conference opponents (15.7) and rebounds (6.5) during the regular season. The North Carolina State transfer reached double digits in 21 games, including the past 14, and had six double-doubles.

Sophomore shooting guard Bri McDaniel received All-Big Ten honorable mention by the coaches and media by leading the Terps in total steals (48) and averaging 13.0 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists. She increased her scoring by 10 points and rebounding by 2.4 from her freshman year and scored in double figures in 18 games.

For the third consecutive season, Iowa senior Caitlin Clark was voted Big Ten Player of the Year. Ohio State’s Kevin McGuff was named Big Ten Coach of the Year and Michigan State sophomore guard Theryn Hallock was voted the Big Ten’s Sixth Player of the Year.

Nebraska forward Natalie Potts was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year by the conference’s coaches, while Purdue forward Mary Ashley Stevenson garnered Big Ten Freshman of the Year from the media panel. Ohio State’s graduate student guard Celeste Taylor earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year laurels from the coaches, while Wisconsin’s sophomore forward Serah Williams received Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year recognition in the media vote.

Maryland (17-12, 9-9 Big Ten), the No. 8 seed, will open the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday against No. 9 seed Illinois at the Target Center in Minneapolis. The second-round game will tip off at 12:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network. The winner will face top-seeded and No. 4-ranked Ohio State at 12:30 p.m. Friday in the quarterfinals.

The Terps enter the conference tournament on the NCAA Tournament bubble. As of Monday, ESPN projected Maryland to be a No. 11 seed and one of the last four teams to receive a bye and avoid the play-in games.
