With the spring high school sports season just over a week old, here’s a look at some of the top teams and players off to strong starts in Baltimore County.

Hot streaks

Teams that are playing at the top of their games

Carver A&T softball: The Wildcats posted two decisive wins to start their season, beating Old Mill, 11-3, and Catonsville, 14-5. They are averaging 14.5 hits per game so far. After taking time off for spring break, the Wildcats are back in action Wednesday against Dulaney.

Franklin baseball: The Indians opened the season 2-0 thanks in part to timely hitting and shutdown pitching. In wins over Dundalk and Kenwood, Franklin pitchers have only given up six hits combined. Meanwhile, the offense is averaging 12 runs per game.

Perry Hall baseball: Gavin Rayner gave the Gators a walk-off win in their opener against Randallstown. A day later, Perry Hall came back with AJ Mendoza striking out 12 in a 6-1 win over Eastern Tech.

Hereford girls lacrosse: The Bulls are averaging 14 goals per game through two wins to open the season. After edging Westminster, a Class 3A state semifinalist last season, 12-9, on March 21, they posted a shutout of county rival Sparrows Point, 16-0.

The starting lineup

Players who have been clutch performers for their teams

Aaron Lippman, Parkville, track and field: Lippman won the 400- and 800-meter runs during a season-opening county meet also including Eastern Tech, Dundalk, Franklin, Milford Mill and Parkville. His 400 time of 49.6 seconds was the best across four county meets that were held March 22.

Aubree Lilly, Carver A&T, track and field: The sophomore won three individual events at the opening inter-county meet: the 100 (13.1), 200 (26.1) and long jump (15-7 1/2). She ran the fastest 200 in the county on opening day, her 100 time was tied for the best and her long jump distance was second best.

Thomas Mezzullo, Dulaney, baseball: The Lions’ leadoff hitter did his job of getting on base well in the team’s first two games, going a combined 6-for-9 with four runs scored.

Allison Pumphrey, Carver A&T, softball: The Wildcats’ leadoff hitter is 4-for-8 with six runs scored and five RBIs through the first two games. She was a home run short of the cycle in the season opener vs. Old Mill.
