[Baltimore Sun] Well-deserved tip of the cap to bridge police | READER COMMENTARY
The acknowledgement before the top of the third inning on Opening Day at Oriole Park at Camden Yards of those three heroic officers who cleared traffic off the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday morning reminded me of a game I went to at Fenway Park in Boston early in 2013 (“Did warnings to get off the Key Bridge reach the construction crew fixing potholes?” March 28).
Just before the top of the fifth inning, a group of men climbed up on top of the first base side dugout. Fans presumed they were some Red Sox old-timers who were being honored, until the public address announcer asked us to recognize the members of the Watertown Police Department who had been responsible for apprehending the Boston Marathon bomber just a few days before.
And Fenway exploded with gratitude and love. I’m sure the cheering must have exceeded that from the night in 1975 when Carlton Fisk waved a home run fair or when the Red Sox won their first World Series in so many years.
We root for our teams. We honor their players. But in the bigger picture, it is the first responders who risk their lives to protect our lives who matter most.
