The Walters Art Museum announced Wednesday that Julia Marciari-Alexander will end her 11-year tenure as the institution’s director in September.

Marciari-Alexander has accepted a position as president of the New York-based Samuel H. Kress Foundation, which provides grants and other support for the preservation and study of European art, architecture and archeology throughout the United States.

Board president Peter Bain said in a news release that the Walters’ board of trustees will conduct an international search for Marciari-Alexander’s successor. She was the first woman appointed to lead the Walters in the organization’s 90-year history.

“Julia will be leaving with a remarkable legacy and a long list of accomplishments,” Bain said in the news release. “Her leadership through the pandemic was nothing short of exceptional.”

Marciari-Alexander wrote in the news release that it’s difficult for her to leave “the Walters collections, its people, and this amazing city” and added: “Throughout my time at the Walters Art Museum, I have been reminded regularly of how special this institution is and the many ways in which it is beloved by the Baltimore community.”
