A MacArthur Middle School student was honored for her work in identifying and eliminating inequities in her school and community.

Eighth-grader Nerissa Robinson received the Equity in Action Award Wednesday during the Anne Arundel Board of Education meeting. Robinson, a Fort Meade resident, was selected for the monthly honor because of her strong commitment to promoting a positive and supportive environment for all students, said Eric Lim, the student member of the board.

“She took the lead in organizing several community events that celebrated diversity and promoted exclusivity,” he said.

At her school, Robinson plays a key role in assisting with the food donation drive to address food insecurity among students. Additionally, she works closely with local organizations and community partners to distribute essential groceries and meal packages to families facing financial hardships, Lim said during the award presentation.

“She collaborates with the school counselors to facilitate discussions, presentations and workshops that promote understanding, empathy and respect among students,” Lim said. “She helps foster a culture of acceptance and support within her school.”

Nerissa actively participates in the school mentoring program where she provides academic support and assistance to students. Lim said she also volunteers to work one-on-one with her classmates to offer homework help, study strategies and test preparation.

“By leveraging your skills and resources to support your peers, you have inspired a culture of collaboration and support within the school community,” Lim said. “For all these reasons mentioned the Board of Education recognizes you as The Student Equity and Action Spotlight April 2024 awardee.

Nerissa received a plaque and a certificate and was joined in photos afterward by members of the board including Superintendent Mark Bedell along with her mother and mentors.
