[Baltimore Sun] Thiru Vignarajah deserves more press attention | READER COMMENTARY

Read Time:1 Minute, 13 Second

It’s surprising that a candidate for mayor like Thiru Vignarajah doesn’t get more coverage (“Sun/FOX45/UB Poll: Mayor Brandon Scott, Sheila Dixon locked in another close race,” April 14).

Sure, he’s run in Baltimore before, but so have current Mayor Brandon Scott and former Mayor Sheila Dixon. Vignarajah is second in fundraising. He is the first mayoral candidate to successfully win public matching funds so that he isn’t beholden to special interests. He’s broken into double poll digits and has ideas that deserve public consideration.

The former prosecutor has a track record of representing the underdog causes and people who are battling entrenched institutional forces in our city. He’s got plans and a vision for actually making the city function for the people who already live here. And he knows that by doing that, Baltimore will not only be a destination for people who visit our museums, health care and educational organizations, sports stadiums and restaurants, but also a place to really live in and enjoy the city neighborhoods and raise the economic boats for all.

The path forward for our city begins with ideas and Thiru Vignarajah’s ideas elevate the conversation. It would be helpful to see them reported on with more than a couple lines in “horse race” coverage of this important mayoral election.
