The American Visionary Art Museum is hosting its 24th annual Kinetic Scripture Race on May 4.

Twenty-four participants are registered to compete in this year’s theme of “Monuments and Masterpieces,” racing through 15 miles of downtown Baltimore streets, mud and sand pits at Patterson Park and in the Inner Harbor.

The team that finishes exactly in the middle will be awarded the Grand Mediocre Champion which is the highest honor in the race.

Opening ceremonies take place at the AVAM at 9:30 a.m., followed by a schedule that includes:

LeMans Start of Race on Covington Street at 10 a.m.
Water Entry at Canton Waterfront from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Sand & Mud Obstacles in Patterson Park from 1:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Finish Line at AVAM at 4 p.m.
Awards Ceremony at AVAM from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Competition is stiff this year. Sculptor David Hess has entered his vehicle, Personal Long-range All-Terrain Yacht Proven UnSafe (PLATYPUS), and will compete again for the 24th consecutive year. PLATYPUS is a 9-person, 26-foot long, 4000-pound amphibious sculpture built from truck, bike and boat parts.

“For me the race is emblematic of how art can foster joy and a sense of community,” Hess said in a news release. “The Kinetic race is simultaneously preposterous and perfect, bringing many smiles to the racers and our fans. It always reminds me that we humans have boundless capacities for problem-solving and creativity.”

There will also be three teams from Jemicy School, which has an official course designed to prepare entrants for the annual race. Last year, the Jemicy team was awarded Best Pit Crew for their patience, ingenuity, and resourcefulness, according to the Baltimore Kinetic website.

Other school teams include St. Paul’s School for Boys and The Park School.
