A geometric, rainbow-hued mural by two Baltimore artists will liven up the west side of the Baltimore Convention Center as the latest installment of the Birdland Murals series, a collaboration between the Orioles and PNC Bank.

The installation by Jessie Unterhalter and Katey Truhn, known as Jessie and Katey, is being unveiled Thursday, the Orioles said in a news release. It’s the ninth mural to be part of the Birdland Murals series, which started in 2019.

“The mural series brings together the Baltimore community’s two great loves: the arts and the Orioles,” PNC Regional President for Greater Maryland Laura Gamble said in the news release.

“Just as Baltimore thrives on its diversity and resilience, the multitude of colors and geometric shapes in this mural reflects the myriad narratives, struggles, and triumphs woven into the fabric of this community,” Kerry R. Watson, Jr., Orioles executive vice president of public affairs for the Orioles, told The Baltimore Sun in a written statement.

Other murals in the series are located in Oriole Park at Camden Yards, with one in Waverly. They’ve been designed by Baltimore artists including Shan Wallace, Adam Stab, Megan Lewis and others.

Unterhalter and Truhn’s mural is only the second to be unveiled outside of the baseball stadium.

The Maryland Institute College of Art graduates aim to “transform public spaces into vibrant, playful experiences,” according to their website, their work typically featuring bright colors and large-scale geometric patterns.

They’ve painted murals across the country and abroad, in addition to those created locally at locations like MICA and Union Craft Brewing.

The duo’s installation on South Howard Street across from Camden Yards “depicts a visual interpretation of the energy and pride that is felt when the community comes together around a collective event,” the Orioles said in a news release. “The vibrant colors and symmetrical composition celebrate the city’s spirit.”

The new Birdland Murals placement at the Baltimore Convention Center aligns with Mayor Brandon Scott’s “Downtown RISE” initiative, according to the Orioles.

“As we continue our work to brighten downtown and showcase the best Baltimore has to offer, this mural will hold a special place in that effort,” Scott said in the news release. “I am incredibly excited for everyone coming downtown for games — or any reason — to see this beautiful new mural and reflect on our city, our history, and the renaissance that we’re building here.”
