[Baltimore Sun] Orioles owner David Rubenstein to soak Bird Bath as ‘guest splasher’ Friday

Read Time:2 Minute, 9 Second

David Rubenstein is ready to get his hands dirty — er, wet.

The Orioles’ new majority owner will be a “guest splasher” in Section 86 on Friday, taking over for Mr. Splash by spraying fans with a hose every time his ballclub hits an extra-base hit or scores a run as part of the team’s running water-themed bit. It just so happens that the first 20,000 fans ages 15 and older at Friday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, which will be broadcast on AppleTV+, will receive a Mr. Splash bobblehead.

Rubenstein has spent his first month at the helm mingling with fans at Camden Yards and touting the “next chapter” of Orioles baseball. Now, he’s taking a plunge into the Bird Bath.

“Do all the owners do this?” Rubenstein asked in the video the Orioles posted on their social media channels. No, they do not. But his early efforts to engage with Orioles fans have helped make Rubenstein one of the most popular people in Baltimore.

The billionaire private equity investor and philanthropist purchased a majority stake in the Orioles from the Angelos family this offseason. The club introduced him on opening day to a welcoming fan base and he has leaned into the enthusiasm with a series of social media videos highlighting the new regime, which includes Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. as a minority partner.

Rubenstein follows the likes of former Orioles outfielder Adam Jones and Maryland Gov. Wes Moore as guest splashers to strap on the flamingo inner tube. Baltimore’s hydration-inspired celebrations, which began last season, have been a frequent occurrence so far in 2024. The Orioles jumped out to a hot start, leading the American League with a 23-11 record and slugging an MLB-best 54 home runs. Friday’s game will kick off a nine-game homestand.
