[Baltimore Sun] Many Americans in need of remedial civics lessons | READER COMMENTARY

Read Time:1 Minute, 2 Second

Thank you so much for the recent “Owner’s Box” commentary by Armstrong Williams (“Armstrong Williams: Keeping our republic requires civic engagement,” May 5). Everything he said was right on the money.

I have been appalled for many years by the willful ignorance and disregard by a vast majority of American citizens regarding our founding documents, our system of government, our democracy and our place in the world. So many just do not know, nor do they care.

When I was in the Anne Arundel County school system in the late ’60s and early ’70s as a middle school and high school student, a course in civics was required. We were taught about all of the aforementioned items and, in addition, our responsibility as American citizens to engage in the political life of our country starting with voter registration and voting on Election Day. I have used these lessons well in my adult life.

I would suggest that the present educational system begin to place a premium on civics education and make it post haste. Today’s high school students are soon tomorrow’s voters.
