[Baltimore Sun] Hogan is the effective centrist the Senate needs | READER COMMENTARY

Read Time:1 Minute, 14 Second

It has been interesting reading the recent commentary in The Baltimore Sun regarding former Gov. Larry Hogan (“Larry Hogan’s commitment to abortion choice: convenient, but not convincing,” May 17).  There are many of us in the nation and Maryland who would prefer to see more centrist lawmakers elected to Congress. Countless newspaper articles and polls would support this view. However, The Sun commentary does not reflect this opinion.

Hogan is a Republican and endorsed former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley for president. He did not support Del. Dan Cox, the Republican nominee for Maryland governor, in the most recent general election, which was a not-too-subtle endorsement of Democrat Wes Moore who was subsequently elected governor. Excellent choice. Hogan governed in a bipartisan and non-confrontational way during his eight years as governor.

Contrary to some opinions, Maryland thrived under his leadership, and Marylanders liked it. Governor Hogan left office with a 77% approval rating (81% Democrats and 68% Republicans), according to the Gonzales Maryland Poll. It is reported that more centrist lawmakers are leaving office. Such individuals look at both views and vote for what is the best for the country. It would be great if Maryland could send Hogan to the U.S. Senate to evaluate both sides of issues and do what is best for the nation.

That would be refreshing.
