[Baltimore Sun] In Maryland, every proposed law gets a fiscal note | READER COMMENTARY

Read Time:51 Second

Letter writer Michael Ernest (“New state laws likely to prove costly,” May 19) is factually incorrect when he asserts, “No one seems to ask nor does the media seem to be interested in the costs of executing and enforcing all these new laws” enacted by the Maryland General Assembly.

On the contrary, every piece of legislation introduced during a given legislative session is subject to review and cost analysis by the legislature’s nationally regarded Department of Legislative Services. DLS generates a “fiscal note” for each bill and typically revises the analysis when amendments alter the proposal in a significant way. Fiscal notes usually provide the most succinct and comprehensible summary of legislation under consideration.

Ernest and all with interest could look it up at mgaleg.maryland.gov. Citizens may or may not have legitimate gripes about state government, but a lack of fiscal transparency isn’t among them.
