[Baltimore Sun] When will Mayorkas be held accountable? | READER COMMENTARY

Read Time:1 Minute, 25 Second

I would venture to say that most people, especially those in positions of great responsibility, have regular (often annual) performance reviews. The outcome usually provides feedback from those who have entrusted the employee to carry out their job with established performance goals. It is not clear whether persons in upper echelons of government (like cabinet members) have such performance appraisals.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed on their performance appraisal of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the U.S. Senate via impeachment articles. Wednesday was supposed to be the second phase of the de facto performance appraisal. However, by quickly dismissing the two articles of impeachment, the Senate failed to live up to its constitutional responsibility to follow through with the House directive to carry out a trial to judge whether Mayorkas failed to execute and enforce existing immigration laws as well as falsely stating in congressional testimony that the border was secure (“Senate rejects impeachment articles against Mayorkas, ending trial against Cabinet secretary,” April 17).

By not following through with impeachment, Senate Democrats essentially approved of how Mayorkas has performed his assigned duties. The question of whether it fit the criterion of a high crime or misdemeanor was set aside by the dismissals. And as such, the U.S. Supreme Court was summarily excluded from its role in impeachments.

But I ask the question: What could be more serious than not carrying out his employer’s sworn duty to execute and enforce laws enacted by Congress, resulting in negative consequences for the citizens and legal residents of this country?
